The United Nations Singers is a choir group made up of employees and former employees at the UN Headquarters in New York. Our group was founded in 1947 when some staff members wanted to get together and share music from their home countries. Today the United Nations Singers receive invitations to sing at a wide range of functions in New York and across the world, from cultural festivals to nursing homes and orphanages, to official events where the Secretary-General and other top UN leaders are in attendance.
Our repertoire consists of folk songs, carols and choral music in dozens of languages. Depending on the occasion we dress in traditional ethnic clothing. Recently we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the UN Singers' existence! From 1947 - 2007 we have been celebrating the world's music. For more information and photos about our special event that took place on October 19, 2007, please click here.
The group usually accepts an invitation once a year to perform abroad. Our last trip was a 10-day journey to Japan in August 2006 where we performed in and around Tokyo and Kamakura. Our next trip will be to the Basque region of Spain in late August 2008. Read more about the trip to Spain information.
